For a long time, many of us learned that being loved meant being available — always, to anyone, for anything. Boundaries felt like rejection. Saying no felt like a small betrayal.
But there is no version of self-compassion that requires you to keep pouring from an empty cup. A boundary is simply the moment where kindness to others has to include kindness to yourself.
You can say no without a story. You can protect your evening, your energy, your peace, without justifying it in three paragraphs. The people who love you well will meet you in that boundary. And the ones who don't were never really meeting you anyway.
